Tangerines
Facts

To most people in the U.S., the name tangerine applies to all ‘zipper-skinned’ citrus fruits. But a tangerine is really the name of only one type of mandarin orange.

One of the most distinctive features of these citrus fruits is that when they are peeled, the segments of fruit separate easily. That’s why they’re called ‘zipper’ fruit!

There are many varieties of mandarins, including tangerines, tangelos, and clementines. Did you know that a tangelo is actually a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit? Neat!

Did you know that Mandarin refers to the bright orange robes worn by the Mandarins? The Mandarins were public officials of the ancient Chinese court.
