Strawberries
Packaging & Transportation
basket

Strawberries have been packed in one pint green plastic baskets since the 1950’s. These baskets are placed in flats, holding 12 pint baskets, or half flats, holding 6 pint baskets, for shipping.

In 1991, a new plastic container called a "clamshell" berry basket, holding one pound of berries, was introduced. Although both types of baskets have vents to maximize airflow, the clamshell is thought to protect the fruit better during shipping, thereby ensuring the freshness and appearance of the strawberries.
