| Papaya has been grown in tropical regions of the world for as long as history has been recorded. It is believed to have come from southern Mexico and Central America. Lets take a closer look at papayas history.
In the 1500’s, Spanish and Portuguese sailors transported seeds to many subtropical countries including the Philippines, Malacca, and India. Papaya seeds were also brought to Panama and the Dominican Republic during this time.
Then, during the 1600’s, Papaya growing spread to warm elevations in South and Central America, Southern Mexico, West Indies, Bahamas, and Bermuda.
Finally the delicious fruit was brought to Florida from the Bahamas in the 1900’s. Also, the Solo Papaya variety from Barbados and Jamaica began growing in the Hawaiian Islands.
