Lettuce
How to Select & Store
Hey Rita, did you know there's lots of different types of lettuce to choose from in your grocery store? Most grocery stores have iceberg, romaine and leaf lettuce. Remember you can always select lettuce, because it's available all year! There's just one place in your supermarket for you to find fresh, crisp lettuce -- HEAD to the produce section!

When choosing lettuce, look for healthy, darker green outer leaves. Iceberg and other head lettuces should be compact, firm, and symmetrical in shape. Oh, and avoid very hard heads of lettuce because they may not be as sweet. Look for large heads of romaine lettuce, but not tooooo large!

O.K., Rita and I are sure that you're going to be an expert at selecting lettuce. Next time you're at the supermarket, head to the produce department, and look for all the varieties. Of course, select your favorite type of lettuce. Then, choose a different kind to take home and try! We know you'll love them all!

At home, store lettuce in a plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper. Here's some tips on how long to store lettuce in the refrigerator:

  • Iceberg Lettuce will last for up to two weeks

  • Romaine Lettuce will last for about 10 days

  • Butterhead and Leaf Lettuce will last for up to one week

O.K, cleaning delicious lettuce is very fun and easy! Just rinse lettuce by running cold water over leaves, or soaking the loose leaves in the sink or in a large bowl of cool water. Then stir with your hand and swish around. It's fun to dry lettuce is a salad spinner! Try it if you have one. Or, just lie lettuce leaves on a towel to dry, and you can gently pat them dry if needed. All that's left to do, is to gently tear leaves into bite-sized pieces and you're ready to create a lettuce work of art -- a salad of course!
