There are more than 50 species of blueberries! Wild blueberries are native plants that have existed for hundreds of years. Cultivated blueberries have been specially farmed for mass consumption. Both types are delicious and nutritious!
Wild low bush blueberries continue to grow in Maine and Canada. They are picked mostly by hand and are smaller in size and darker in color than cultivated blueberries. Wild blueberries are delicious and have a unique flavor.
About 95 percent of cultivated blueberries are Northern high bush varieties, which grow primarily in the northern regions of the United States and in British Columbia. The remaining five percent are Rabbiteye varieties, which grow better in southern regions of the United States. Fruits of the high bush blueberry are blue-black with a powdery, silver-white sheen on their surface, which is called the bloom.
