The raisin industry began booming in California in the 1870's after a heat wave dried the grape crop on the vine. Farmers found the best spot for growing grapes for raisins near Fresno in the San Joaquin Valley. The San Joaquin Valley is located in central California. It extends from Stockton in the north to Bakersfield in the south. It is known as one of the richest agricultural regions in the world.
