Papayas
Packaging & Transportation
From the field, papaya is transported in large plastic bins, also called lugs, on trucks to the packing plant. Each lug holds between 20 to 25 pounds of papaya.

At the packing facility, papaya is rinsed and sorted by color and size. Then it is hand-packed into boxes, with each box containing about 8 to 13 papayas.

Boxes of papaya are then transported to refrigerated storage facilities where they are stacked on pallets and held at a temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Papayas from Hawaii are transported to the United States by planes and ships.  It takes about one day for papayas to be transported by plane and about seven days by ship.
