Aaron Artichoke
Hi, I'm Aaron Artichoke. I'm a strong and hardy member of the thistle family.
Artichokes are one of the more difficult vegetables to prepare and eat, but oh, it is worth the effort, even if you're not a cook! Did you know that an artichoke is really a flower? When you eat an artichoke, you're eating flower petals. Cool, eh? Plus, you get to eat artichokes with your hands!
Artichokes are most often steamed or boiled and can be eaten hot or cold. Eating an artichoke for the first time can be intimidating, but with some tips from me, you'll soon be a pro! Simply pull the petals off one at a time. Place the end of each petal between your teeth, scraping off only the thick base. It's nice to have an extra plate or dish on the table for the petals as you finish with them. You can dip the petals in lemon juice, mayonnaise, or melted butter. Just be creative and have fun!
One medium artichoke counts as one serving of your 5 A Day. Artichokes are high in Vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. And did you know that you can eat the "heart", which is at the center of the artichoke?
