Tangerines
History

The tangerine is a type of mandarin orange.

Mandarin oranges have been grown in Southeast Asia and the Philippines for over 3,000 years!

This delicious fruit was reserved strictly for the privileged class in the Far East.

From Asia, the sweet fruit was brought to Europe, where it was grown mainly in Britain and Italy in the 1800s.

Around 1840, the Italians brought the mandarin to Louisiana in the United States, and from there it was brought to Florida, and then California.

The first mandarin oranges to be exported were shipped from the city of Tangiers in Morocco – that’s why the fruit is also called a “Tangerine.” Cool!
