Nutrition in Grapes

Grapes, referred to by many as "nature's candy," are not only a wonderful snack, but are also packed with nutritional power. All grapes - red and green - contain flavonoids and phenols.

Flavonoids are what give plants their color and flavor. They are also a type of antioxidant. This means they help to protect our body against harmful free radicals that can damage our body's cells.

Phenols are found in the cells of all plants. They not only help to hold the plant's cell walls together, but also help protect the plant against infections. In humans, phenols help protect against heart disease and certain cancers.

If you were to look through a super-powered microscope, this is what a phenol would look like in a plant cell.

One serving of grapes (1 1/2 cups) contains just 90 calories and provides 25 percent of your daily vitamin C! To check out more grape facts, go to the grape nutrition label.
