Broccoli
Growing and Harvesting Broccoli

Broccoli is usually grown from a seed planted in the field. Over 30,000 broccoli plants can be grown in one acre of land! Broccoli grows best in areas with a cool climate and moist soil.

Broccoli grows to maturity in approximately 80-120 days. Three crops of broccoli grow each year in the Salinas Valley of California.

It may take two to three passes to completely harvest a field of broccoli. During each pass through the field, workers cut and trim broccoli heads and pack them into boxes. Workers walk behind a very slow moving machine that holds boxes ready to be filled. As boxes are filled they are loaded onto pallets, and when the pallets are filled a truck takes them to a cooling facility.
