Learn About Phytochemicals

You probably know that fruits and vegetables have Vitamins A, C and fiber. But did you know they also contain "phytochemicals"? That's a big word that's easy to say! It's pronounced "FIGHT-O-CHEMICALS."

Here in Fruit and Vegetable Land we call them "phytos." Phytos give fruits and vegetables their bright colors. They also work with Vitamins and minerals to keep your body healthy. Wow!

You can increase your "phyto-power" by eating colorful fruits and vegetables every day!

Here are some SuperKids friends to tell you more about fabulous phytos!

The phytochemical LUTEIN (loo-teen) is found in green leafy vegetables like spinach and collards. Lutein keeps your eyes healthy. So, when you think about healthy eyes, think about eating dark green leafy vegetables!

Lycopene

Red fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, watermelon and red grapefruit have lots of LYCOPENE ("lie-co-peen")! You can even find lycopene in tomato and spaghetti sauce.

Apples are loaded with FLAVONOIDS ("flay-vah-noids") and fiber too! So, grab a crunchy, fresh apple and take a couple bite-ohs to get lots of fabulous phytos!

Carotenes

Orange fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals called CAROTENES ("care-ah-teens"). Carotenes are really hot news, they give fruits and vegetables their colorful hues! Orange fruits and vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe and mangos are full of carotene. Green vegetables like broccoli, spinach and kale have carotenes, too!
